Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup whole milk, warmed
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 3 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled and chopped
  • ½ cup brown sugar

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine warm milk, active dry yeast, and granulated sugar; let sit until frothy (about 5 minutes).
  2. In another bowl, whisk together flour and salt; add melted butter, eggs, and yeast mixture to form a soft dough.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap or a damp towel, and let rise until doubled (about 1 hour).
  5. While dough rises, mix chopped apples with brown sugar and cinnamon in a bowl.
  6. Roll out the dough into a rectangle; spread softened butter over it followed by the apple filling. Roll tightly into a log.
  7. Slice the log lengthwise to reveal layers; braid the two halves together.
  8. Place in a greased loaf pan, cover again, and let rise for another 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  9. Bake for about 30-35 minutes until golden brown.
