These delightful homemade pretzels bring warmth and joy to your holiday gatherings, making them a cherished tradition. With minimal ingredients and easy instructions, you’ll have everyone asking for seconds as they savor each delicious bite.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ cups warm water (110°F/43°C)
  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour (or 2 cups all-purpose + 2 cups whole wheat)
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • ⅓ cup baking soda
  • 1 egg (for egg wash) + 1 tbsp water
  • Optional: cinnamon sugar for sprinkling

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast by mixing warm water, yeast, and sugar in a bowl. Let sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Gradually add the yeast mixture while stirring. Knead until smooth for about 5 minutes.
  3. Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for about an hour or until doubled in size.
  4. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Shape the risen dough into pretzel shapes.
  5. Boil water with baking soda in a pot. Dip each pretzel in the boiling solution for about 30 seconds.
  6. Place on parchment-lined baking sheets, brush with egg wash, sprinkle with salt or cinnamon sugar, and bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
