- ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp salt
- 3 large eggs (room temperature)
- 1 cup whole milk (or almond/oat milk)
- ½ cup unsalted butter (melted)
- 2 tsp pure vanilla extract
- Food coloring (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round pans.
- In a large bowl, mix flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- Add melted butter, eggs, milk, and vanilla; beat on medium speed until smooth (about 2 minutes).
- Divide half the batter into another bowl; add food coloring for the heart layer.
- Pour half of each batter into greased pans and bake for 25-30 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean. Let cool.
- Cut out heart shapes from the colored layer and place in one pan.
- Pour remaining chocolate batter over the hearts and bake again for 30-35 minutes. Allow cooling before frosting.
