  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ cup baking soda (for boiling)
  • 1 beaten egg (for egg wash)
  • Coarse sea salt (for topping)

Instructions

  1. 1. Activate the yeast: In a mixing bowl, combine warm water and sugar. Sprinkle yeast over the top and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. 2. Create the dough: Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture. Mix until combined, then knead on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth.
  3. 3. Let it rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  4. 4. Shape the pretzels: Punch down the dough, divide into equal pieces, roll each piece into ropes, and twist into pretzel shapes.
  5. 5. Boil & bake: Boil water with baking soda in a pot. Boil each pretzel for about 30 seconds, then transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  6. 6. Add toppings & bake: Brush with egg wash, sprinkle with coarse sea salt, and bake at 425°F (220°C) for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
